As the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) rejected two applications for visas to import goods from China, the news agency reported.
“It is not known what the status of the applications will be,” CBP spokesman Richard Garcia told Reuters news agency.
“These are preliminary indications.
We will have more information on this as it becomes available,” he said.”
The Department of Commerce has not yet been notified of the visas.”
The Chinese government is seeking to build an economic base in the United States.
China is seeking a membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO), which would allow it to negotiate trade deals with the US.
The CBP and DHS were among a number of federal agencies to reject Chinese applications for US visas in September.
China has been trying to attract investment in the US by offering jobs and low tariffs in return for US technology.
The US has imposed sanctions on several Chinese companies over the country’s alleged cyber attacks and cyber espionage, including two firms that supply military equipment to the Chinese military.
The Chinese have been trying for years to open a US-China border crossing, and the country has been pursuing visa-free travel for Chinese citizens and residents since 2012.US President Donald Trump has said he would like to open the border, but that the border is too far to the south for it to happen.
